The latest fuel consumption results from Energotest 2009 tests made last September with a mechanical tarp system from ElCargo show a 14.93% fuel economy with a covered dump trailer compared to an open one.
St-Hyacinthe, November 23, 2009 – The latest fuel consumption results from Energotest 2009 tests made last September with a mechanical tarp system from ElCargo show a 14.93% fuel economy with a covered dump trailer compared to an open one. These test were made last September as part of the forth edition of Energotest fuel efficiency testing at Transport Canada motor vehicle test track in Blainville Quebec.
The primary objective of a mechanical tarp system from ELCARGO is to protect bulk merchandise inside a dump trailer, to prevent losses, and to facilitate its opening and closing operations while making this operation safer. But the tarp system can also reduce the aerodynamic drag of the tractor-trailer assembly when the dumper is empty.

Our clients were coming back to us with stories about amazing fuel economy. But we did not have any scientific source to support our clients’ words. That is what brought us to take part of Energotest project. »
Results were more than conclusive, and now allow the manufacturing company to rightfully claim that using a mechanical tarp system from ElCargo can lead to almost 15% fuel economy.
This recognition adds up to the recent certification of ElCargo’s technologies for the Quebec Transport Ministry’s Energy Efficiency in Freight Transportation Program (equivalent to the SmartWay program. This certification allows carriers to ask for a grant that can cover up to 30% of the purchase and installation costs of an ElCargo tarp system.
« The profitability of our mechanical systems was already great, thanks to the fuel economy they provide, adds Réal Royer. But with the availability of this grant, there is no reason a carrier or owner-operator should drive around without the benefits of our mechanized tarp systems. »
